Our Unit

UBRJ is a research unit composed of Hokkaido University's Slavic-Eurasian Research Center (the core organization) and the university's humanities/social science graduate schools, the Center for Ainu and Indigenous Studies and the Hokkaido University Museum. Its main objectives are to promote border studies throughout Japan and abroad; to strengthen collaboration with domestic and international research centers; and to foster the development of young researchers in order to advance research on border issues. The activities listed below are engaged in achieving these objectives.

  1. Research and investigation of border issues
  2. Publication of academic journals
  3. Organization of intensive summer courses, symposiums and museum exhibitions in collaboration with the Slavic-Eurasian Research Center and the Japan International Border Studies Network (JIBSN)
  4. Collaboration with domestic and international research institutions and networks

Unit Organization

The unit consists of teaching staff from the Slavic-Eurasian Research Center and collaborative researchers, all of whom are appointed by the Center's Director.
